5th Energy Meteorology Symposium – June 2018

5th Energy Meteorology Symposium – June 2018

Clim2Power featured on a poster presented by DWD at the 5th Energy Meteorology Symposium, June 5th-8th 2018, demonstrating ongoing research projects with varying time scales and applications, other projects featured include CM SAF, COSMO-REA, QuWind100, PerduS, Gridcast, and ORKA II.

Germany’s National Meteorological Service, Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), is engaged in many areas in order to support Germany’s energy transition with weather and climate services. The value chain from raw data to model improvement and post processing is optimized in different ways and leads to tailored weather and climate information for the users. The research and development activities at DWD are characterized by interdisciplinary consortia and cooperation partners of the energy industry.

Renewable energy generated 104% of Portugal’s electricity consumption in March

Renewable energy generated 104% of Portugal’s electricity consumption in March

For the first time in over 40 years, Portugal generated more renewable energy than needed. In March, energy from renewable sources, mostly wind and hydroelectric power, made up 103.6 % of mainland electricity consumption according to data from REN.

A report by the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association and the sustainability group ZERO said: “It is expected that by 2040 the production of renewable electricity will be able to guarantee, in a cost-effective way, the total annual electricity consumption of mainland Portugal”.

Renewable Electricity Consumption Ensured In Three Consecutive Winter Days In Portugal

Renewable Electricity Consumption Ensured In Three Consecutive Winter Days In Portugal

Electricity consumption in mainland Portugal was fully ensured by renewable sources for almost three consecutive days in a winter period – from 4:00 p.m. on Friday, 9 March, 2018 and 1 p.m. on Monday, March 12, 2018.

According to data from REN (National Energy Networks), the renewable electricity produced in that period was 521 GWh, while national electricity consumption was 408 GWh. The main highlight goes to the national wind farms, which alone supplied 65% of electricity consumption in that winter period.

The record of 107 consecutive hours in mainland Portugal running only with solar, hydro and wind power had already been achieved in a spring period of year 2016, between 6:45 am on May 7, Saturday, and 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday at 11 am.

These numbers reinforce the role of renewable sources in the reliable and safe supply of electricity needs of Portugal.
